MATEVOSYAN Hrant was born in the village of Ahnidzor (Lori region of RA). Armenian writer. Brother of H. I. Matevosyan. He graduated from the Yerevan State Pedagogical Institute (1962) and Moscow Higher Course on Scriptwriting (1967). He headed the Writers' Union of Armenia from 1996 until 2001. In the novels and short story collections “August” (1967), “Our run” (1978), “The Trees” (1978) Matevosyan depicted the Armenian village, described the spiritual-moral character of the individual, raised ontological and psychological problems. The first works of Matevosyan received a warm reception from readers. By describing past and the history of the village Matevosyan depicted the strong connection between soil and human being and spiritual harmony with the environment.
He received Armenian SSR (1983, for the performance “Our Corner of the Big World” based on the short stories) and USSR (1984, “Your family” in Russian) state prizes. Deputy of RA Supreme Council (1991-95). Writers' Union of Armenia set up a literary prize after Hrant Matevosyan in 2004. A school and a street in Yerevan were named after H. Matevosyan.
