MAKINTSYAN Poghos was born in 1884 in Inner Agulis (Nakhichevan). An Armenian statesman, literary critic, translator, publicist. He graduated from Moscow Lazarian Seminary in 1906, Moscow State University in 1913. Makintsyan worked in state institutions of RSFSR then moved to Armenia. In 1922-24 he was engaged in diplomatic activities in Constantinople and in Milan and Paris in 1925-1927.
He was the secretary of the USSR academy of sciences of Transcaucasian branch in the last years of his life. Together with V. Teryan and others he compiled and edited the three books of “Garun” anthology in 1910-12 in Moscow. He published research works dedicated to H. Tumanyan and A. Isahakyan with the title “Features”. Cooperated with V. Teryan and M. Gorki for publishing the “The collection of the Armenian Literature” and wrote its preface (“Review of the Armenian Literature”). He participated in compiling the anthology “The Poetry of Armenia” together with V. Brusov in 1916. In 1923-25 Makintsyan compiled and edited the four volume work of V. Teryan. He translated into Armenian the drama by G. Hauptmann “The Sunken Bell”, “Don Quixote” by Servantes, “Boris Godunov” by A. Pushkin. He translated the works of H. Tumanyan, A. Shirvanzade, G. Mahari into Russian. He is the author of literary and journalistic works. In 1938 P. Makintsyan was unreasonably imprisoned and executed but was later acquitted.
